A Senior System Engineer works under limited supervision and is responsible for the smooth operation of the corporate UNIX/Linux Operating system. Working under the guidance of Lead System’s Engineer and Technical Management is responsible for the proactive monitoring, performance, maintenance, and optimization of UNIX/Linux operating systems and related SAN. Maintenance may include performing system backups; provides guidance to vendors, analysts, and engineers in troubleshooting and restoring systems; creating automated system processes, operating system performance and disaster recovery procedures; and assists analysts, project leaders, and engineers with operating system issues. Individuals at this level have either the experience or the educational background to qualify them to perform tasks independently staff this level. Sr. system engineers may train junior System’s Engineer and give direction to system engineers.
Background in information systems required
Has experience in a complex multi-platform environment required
Bachelor’s degree with two years of experience or equivalent experience (or the equivalent) in CIS, MIS, IS, Computer Science, Engineering or Business Administration with emphasis in information systems required
Knowledge of operating UNIX/Linux required
Strong familiarity with command line interface on UNIX/Linux required
Ability to diagnose and solve moderate operating system issues required.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office required.
Knowledge of file system restoration procedures required
Knowledge of data structures and operating systems required.
Advanced Experience with Unix shell scripts technologies required.
Advanced Experience with PERL scripting desired.
Advanced Experience with IBM MQ Series desired.
Experience with IBM Websphere desired.
Understanding of operating system design, architecture, security & performance tuning preferred
Proficient in automation (shell scripting) and documentation
Ability to work independently required.
Experience writing technical documents required.
Ability to train entry level staff required
Ability to work with analysts, vendors, and others to troubleshoot and develop new documentation and processes required.
Must be comfortable in both self-managed and team driven tasks
Maintains excellent communication with the IT Manager on all tasks and projects.?
Provides emergency on-call support on a rotating schedule.

ORGANIZATION:Under the general supervision of a Manager but may receive advice and assistance from the Director of Information Systems, Lead System Engineer(s). A working relationship with all Information Systems staff must be maintained. A professional working relationship with staff from user departments, other regional healthcare facilities, and hardware vendors must be maintained. The senior system engineer is under the supervision of the on-call Manager whenever the Manager is unavailable. No managerial and supervisory responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Core 10 Key Descriptors):
Knowledge of AIX/UNIX/HP operating system, utilities, file system, kernel, memory management, security, and devises as they relate to the Oracle database or Advanced understanding of MS Window OS as it relates to MS SQL functions.
Advanced shell script writing ability using PERL BSH, SH and KSH.
Strong ability to work independently to troubleshoot OS related problems
Ability to work effectively in a stressful environment.
Experience with Unix/Linux is a required.
Experience in Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
Advanced experience with backups, restores and recovery of Volume groups, logical volumes, and file systems
Ability to use and configure High Availability (HA) software in a Disaster Recovery configuration.
Experience in implementing operational automation using scripts.
Experience working with Windows server, including Active Directory and proper disk configurations.
Strong communication and documentation skills.
Proven Ability to run medium projects using structured implementation methodology
