Overview

The Data Architect role at Consumers Energy will be responsible for owning the body of knowledge regarding a particular functional area of data within the enterprise. They will be expected to understand how data elements are stored, consumed, integrated, and managed by various systems and applications as well as how they flow between systems.

The Data Architect position will be business partner facing, working closely with individuals in the business units in order to understand analytic use cases and functional requirements.

The role will spend up to 50% of its time interacting with internal IT teams as they will be responsible for the architecture of a given data & analytic solution, working with data engineers to ensure that what is produced will solve the business unit’s problem statement/use case.

The Data Architect will be expected to understand our Data & Analytics strategy and work with our architecture team and leadership to ensure that our analytics roadmap is consistently updated to address emerging technologies and capabilities.

The Data Architect roles will facilitate and help shape the Data & Analytics governance process. In partnership with our Data Management lead, the role will help develop and maintain standards and communicate these across the organization. This role will be a bridge to help connect the dots between analytic use cases and how the data is made available and utilized from a technology perspective.

Responsibilities:

Determine framework of a solution, including the following:

  • Platforms & recommended integration(s)

  • Data Flow Diagram

  • Documenting/Vetting out assumptions

Assisting Analyst/Data Engineer with technical roadblocks on projects/enhancements

Answering questions from Business Partners/marketing our services

Supporting our Data & Analytics Governance processes

  • Understanding existing, creating new, and communicating standards

  • Provide visibility into data quality issues

  • Ensure that required governance articles are created and standards are adhered to within analytic projects

Required Qualifications:

Requires a bachelor’s degree preferably in an Information Technology field and typically has 5 or more years applicable exempt working experience with at least 1 at the IT Technical Sr Analyst II level or the equivalent.

Less than a bachelor’s degree may be acceptable if accompanied by other technical training and extensive experience (internal/external) in positions that demonstrate required abilities and performance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Data Modeling & Database Design

  • Database Optimization

  • Curiosity & interest in learning emerging technologies

  • Communication – must be able to work 1:1 with business partners as well as present concepts and architecture design to large groups (both technical and functional)

  • Understanding of basic analytic & statistical concepts and principals

  • Deep understanding of CE data platforms, including SingleStore, SAP BW, SAP Native HANA, Power BI.

  • Understanding of Cloud analytic platforms and use is a plus.

  • Agile Experience is a plus

  • Experience/exposure to a business unit is a plus.

Essential Functions

Works closely with department managers and users to define and analyze business and operational problems, process improvement opportunities and requirements; analyzes operational and business mandates and legal requirements; identifies and analyzes complex, ambiguous and/or conflicting business process issues; advises department managers on applications development, enhancement and maintenance issues; explains technology and process options and assists managers in analysis and decision making; analyzes management information needs and recommends data and reporting processes; coordinates the development of department priorities and works within IT to align initiatives to these priorities; facilitates user meetings and joint development sessions. Develops and refines business models and relationship diagrams; evaluates methods of improving efficiency and cost effectiveness of business, technical and operational processes; works with users to reengineer work processes; analyzes functional business requirements and translates user expectations into detailed business requirements, specifications and success criteria; works with Information Systems to develop conceptual proposals for business process automation initiatives; recommends work process and/or operational changes to complement system functionalities; serves as an advocate for department needs with IT; stays abreast of developments in departmental processes to anticipate emerging technology needs. Participates in the development of statements of work for RFPs/RFIs; participates in evaluating vendor applications and solutions; coordinates department review of vendor deliverables for accuracy and completeness, ensuring that department needs and requirements have been met. Develops significant application/hardware solutions to problems and addresses change request issues that require assignment of resources. Analyzes and troubleshoots complex and sometimes urgent applications problems and errors; takes action or communicates solutions to problems; answers technical questions and provides guidance to users on system functionalities and methods for correcting problems. Develops training materials and handouts; conducts user applications training classes and one-on-one training sessions; develops and maintains user and system documentation. Designs and generates custom reports to meet user needs; uses reporting tools to extract user-required data. Plans and coordinates the deployment of new technologies for client solutions; coordinates user acceptance testing and the resolution of problems identified. Regular attendance is expected.
