Job Description

The Role​

We are looking for a hard-working Hardware-in-the Loop Simulation Integration engineer (SIE) to create HIL environments to enable verification and validation of embedded controllers for engine, transmission, electrification propulsion and battery, chassis, and intelligent brake controls. The successful candidate will be able to integrate dynamic plant models for HIL real-time closed loop simulation, based on requirements and features provided by the Software Integration manager. In addition the HIL SIE engineer is responsible for working with the HIL bench users, such as CTEs, CIEs, algorithm and calibration engineers to make sure the HIL simulation meets their testing requirements.


  • Comprehend new features rolled out to controller programs by Software Integration Managers, and ensure the features are effectively included in the HIL plant models

  • Integrate dynamic Plant Models for HIL real-time closed-Loop simulation (Simulink based framework).

  • Develop and integrate sub-system models such as, sensors and actuators models, serial data communication (e.g. CAN, LIN, etc.), and ECU behavioral models.

  • Specify Open-Loop Model Requirements and create Open-Loop HIL models for testing Propulsion controls

  • Evaluate, parametrize, and tune HIL bench simulations based on system requirements and calibrations

  • Plan, communicate, and coordinate HIL model roll-out to support applications and features requested by user community as needed

  • Work with bench users, algorithm development engineers and safety engineers to understand new feature requirements and to make sure the HIL simulation meets their testing requirements.

  • Conduct and participate in peer reviews for HIL modeling and integration framework

  • Work closely with Plant Modeling and Software-in-the loop (SIL) teams to ensure that common models and other simulation assets are shared between HIL and SIL simulations

  • Work with internal resources and suppliers to provide bench harness and load box specifications, coordinate changes, and ensure proper HIL bench rollout.

  • Lead regular HIL users meetings to track open issues, communicate future changes, prioritize actions, and solicit user input to improve HIL systems.

  • Work with team members, technical leaders, and management as necessary to support and execute program imperatives.

  • Lead a team of technical specialists and manage their workload

  • Provide strategic direction in HIL area of expertise

  • Mentor and train new employees


  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Computer Science

  • 2+ years of experience with vehicle/propulsion system development or HIL/SIL modeling tools for automotive embedded controls software development

  • Knowledge and experience in control system design, integration, and testing

  • Real-time simulation experience and knowledge of dSPACE or other HIL/SIL simulation platforms

  • Modeling experience in MATLAB/Simulink, or other modeling tools, such as TESIS, AMESim, GT-Power, etc.

  • Results driven individual with high level of initiative, urgency and pro-activity

  • High degree of functional / technical and project management skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Highly focused on meeting customer needs, and communicating effectively with the customer

Additional Job Description

Desired Skills

  • MS in Engineering, Physics, Math, Computer Science, Information Technology or Chemistry

  • 5 to 10 years of experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop tools for automotive embedded controls software Verification & Validation

  • Propulsion or Vehicle Plant Modeling and Integration experience, as well as system-level experience

  • Experience with commonly used HIL bench tools, such as ETAS INCA, Lauterbach, CAN (CANalyzer or Vehicle Spy), software code generation, Python, etc.

  • Experience in leading large and/or difficult projects with high levels of ambiguity

  • Familiarity of additional simulation tools (e.g. GT Suite, CarSim, Amesim, etc.)
