Job Description

We are seeking creative, highly motivated, agile thinkers with passion and expertise in Controls with great attention to detail. The selected candidate will develop controls and diagnostics using appropriate, common methods for Vehicle Motion Embedded Controls (VMEC) features and support the growth controls and diagnostic capability to keep General Motors at the forefront of technology in the respective areas.

  • Work closely with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to understand functional requirements and implement appropriate control solutions

  • Define controls and diagnostics subsystem level requirements that:

  • Ensure compliance to safety requirements

  • Ensure compliance with government regulations and GM-internal policies

  • Meet higher level physics based requirements.

  • Enable efficient implementation in and embedded controller.

  • Address lessons learned

  • Ensure subsystem level test requirements and the verification of the controls and diagnostic design.

  • Optimize controls design through modeling, simulation, data collection, and analysis.

  • Develop controls-oriented model:

  • Selection of the appropriate method to control and/or diagnose a given feature

  • Consideration for system characteristics and constraints with input from cross functional team.

  • Help define calibration strategies and promote model-based practices in algorithm strategies and calibrations

  • Support resolution of vehicle, plant, or customer issues related to controls and calibration

  • Help create tools, libraries and training material to enable capability growth and support learning of the team.

  • Mentor new employees to help increase capabilities and share knowledge.

  • Adhere to all safety precautions and requirements, treating safety as the top priority during all work activities

  • Work with partners in multiple organizations to ensure features and systems are delivered with quality and timeliness.

  • Eye on innovation - technical knowledge, study application of new techniques and develop new tools and processes to keep General Motors at the forefront of the controls and diagnostics technology in areas that will benefit GM.

  • Travel as required

Additional Job Description

Minimum Required Skills and Experience:

  • BS in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent degree.

  • Minimum 2+ years Engineering experience with preferred working experience related to embedded controls and/or controls/software development

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability for collaboration and teamwork

  • Experience with Safety Critical Design

  • Skilled with Simulink, MATLAB, DOORs and GIT environment(s); plant modeling and analysis tools

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with sometimes incomplete requirements

  • Very high level of analytical problem solving skills where problems are unusual and difficult

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and assignments with a high level of autonomy and accountability for results.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and achieve substantial influence without administrative authority

  • Demonstrated honesty, integrity and trust. Lead by example

  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills in job-related area

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • MS or PhD in Engineering with focus on Controls. In depth knowledge of algorithm development and calibration for propulsion system Controls.​

  • DFSS Black Belt Certification, highly preferred

  • Strong understanding of major automotive subsystems.​

  • Experience with design, implementation and testing of embedded Controls. ​

  • Experience in plant modeling and analysis tools.​

  • Demonstrated strong development expertise in applying the dynamic system modeling principles and control theories.​

  • Experience in Controls software development following structured software design and implementation principles and practices. ​

  • Propulsion system modeling and simulation experience including engines, transmissions and driveline​

  • Experience in Software-in-the-Loop, Model-in-the-Loop and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Simulation. ​

  • Experience with calibration and rapid controller prototyping tools. ​

  • Proven record of innovation in propulsion system Controls (patented technologies implemented in production).​

  • “C” programming experience​

  • High level of oral and written communication skills
