Description

Dowhas an exciting opportunity for aCheminformatics Specialistwithin the Toxicology & Environmental Research & Consulting (TERC) group.It would be preferable if the successful candidate can join our team inMidland, MI, but a remote role also may be possible.

The candidate will partner with members of TERC’s cheminformatics team to implement and review externally licensed computational models (Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship models [QSAR models]), support read-across and supervise computational model building. The successful candidate will interact with Dow toxicologists, businesses and R&D and shape the future cheminformatics strategy. This specialist will represent Dow’s program and perspectives on cheminformatics modeling in external forums. This position also involves supervision of cheminformatics team members.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with current cheminformatics leader to learn Dow’s approach to cheminformatics modeling and how this information is shared with and used by Dow stakeholders

  • Implement and review predictions from externally licensed QSAR models

  • Identify priorities for cheminformatics group and individual team members; assign tasks, interact with team, review read across/model outputs

  • Identify publicly available datasets for incorporation in Dow models

  • Develop strategies to build and evaluate Dow cheminformatics models using available workflows; identify approaches to improve models (e.g., fingerprinting, statistics)

  • Share modeling/read across results with Dow businesses and R&D; advise customers on utility and limitations of modeled data

  • Identify priorities and develop cheminformatic Strategic Research Program (SRP) projects to further develop program; integrate with other Predictive Tox priorities when appropriate

  • Develop and implement strategies to improve regulatory acceptance of Dow models

  • Represent Dow’s cheminformatics program in external venues (e.g., scientific meetings, QSAR expert groups, IATA implementation)

  • Mandatory compliance with work group, facility, and site EH&S policies

Job Skills/Duties:

  • Implement and review predictions from externally licensed QSAR models

  • Review read across, data, models developed by cheminformatics team and provide feedback as needed

  • Communicate results to TERC customers; track cheminformatic project work to show program value

  • Lead cheminformatics group by assigning tasks, assisting with employee development and training, providing input on overall employee performance

  • Develop future strategy for cheminformatics team (prioritize models, research, etc.); track the current state of the science in cheminformatics and regulatory utility

  • Support cheminformatics needs for TERC, R&D and Dow businesses as assigned by Group Leaders

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Ph.D. with relevant experience building models is required. A Ph.D. in Toxicology, Physiology, Chemistry, and/or Computer Programming are preferred.

  • Proficiency in model building tools is required; computer programming (KNIME, Python, R, Chem Sketch, SMILES/SMARTS codes) is preferred.

  • Strong leadership skills with ability to develop longer range research plan.

  • Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills to work with a variety of stakeholders (e.g., cheminformatics team, tox consultants, R&D, Dow businesses).

  • Effective multitasking and prioritization of required work to meet deadlines.

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Very strong background in organic chemistry with application to mammalian biology is preferred.

  • Critical thinking and careful attention to detail to develop, evaluate and troubleshoot cheminformatic models is preferred.
