Job Summary

We are currently hiring for a Lead Control System Architect/Programmer - Energy Storage Systems.

In this role, you will pioneer the hardware configuration and programming of an Energy Management System (EMS) for use with battery energy storage system (BESS) and potentially PV Solar generating plant in a hybrid configuration as part of a comprehensive energy storage offering. You will be part of a select team of professionals developing energy storage offerings in the exciting, emerging market of energy storage. You will have access to BESS pilot site to implement and test control logic prior to field implementation. Initial responsibilities are focused on hands-on implementation of control functions defined by other members of the team, with an opportunity to grow into Team Leader role as program volume expands. This position offers a remote / work from home arrangement if preferred by applicant, although the Core BESS design team and BESS pilot system are located in Kansas City and occasional on-site work will be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hands-on programming of the Energy Management System (site controller). The EMS will integrate multiple sub-systems from various OEMs, including; battery management system (BMS), fire and gas detection, fire suppression, inverter controls, HVAC control systems, dispatch (SCADA) systems, etc.

  • Collaborate with the BESS design team to translate project-specific functional control requirements into executable control logic. Functional requirements will be presented as a combination of written (Word) descriptions, SAMA analog control diagrams, and Boolean logic diagrams.

  • Lead the development of technical requirements for associated control hardware selection and procurement efforts for control system components.

  • Implement HMI graphic user interfaces in collaboration with BESS design team.

  • Supports Substation SCADA team to integrate EMS hardware and data into larger site-wide SCADA network.

  • Management of datasets for use by various systems including historian and SCADA systems.

  • Work creatively to troubleshoot and improve control logic to increase ease of implementation and improve user experience.

  • Configuration Management and deployment of software version updates

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or equivalent Engineering Technology degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering

  • Motivated, self-starter

  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively on diverse teams

  • Strong Communication skills; English fluency is required

  • Hands-on experience with substation automation controllers such as SEL RTAC 3530.

  • Familiarity with energy storage Battery Management Systems (BMS) is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with inverter and/or power electronics control is strongly preferred.

  • Experience working with (or at minimum familiarity with) the following communications protocols: Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, DNP Modbus, DNP3, IEC61850, CanBus

  • Five years hands-on programming experience on industrial control system platforms such as PLCs, DCS, Industrial PCs. Programming experience on multiple platforms is a plus

  • Two years of battery storage control strongly preferred

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in computer science or related field OR equivalent work experience.

  • Four to six years related experience.
