Akebono Brake Corporation EPB Systems Design Engineer in Farmington Hills, Michigan


Based on internal/external/regulatory requirement, develop the electromechanical brake system and architecture through the phases of requirement analysis, establishing system design specification, system design and test verification. Achieve the optimized system performance by working with design engineers responsible for subsystems and components to derive necessary requirements using both top-down and bottom-up approaches. With combined theoretical, numerical and testing methodology, ensure the system design meets requirements via testing and proving traceability from requirements all the way down to test verification results. The brake system could be for service or parking function only, or combined such functions.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • System Analysis and Documentation

  • Establish Akebono?s baseline system requirements for advanced electric brake applications;

  • Manage and establish core work products used for validation of system requirements;

  • Collaborate with cross functional engineering team to establish system requirement specifications.

  • Collaborate with cross functional engineering team to establish component-level requirements for optimized system architecture and performance;

  • Support system engineering team with establishment of use and test cases with traceability to system requirement specifications;

  • Collaborate with system engineering team to insure requirement traceability throughout the development lifecycle.

  • Participate in team reviews to make sure the development work is fully A-SPICE and ISO26262 compliant; generate necessary evidence report for demonstrating the compliances.

  • System Design and Development

  • Based on the system requirement specifications, optimize the system architecture and design to ensure complete requirements coverage.

  • Establish the theoretical system model from first principles using conventional or analytical system dynamics;

  • Work with subsystem/component design engineers to establish necessary system parameter requirements.

  • Develop closed loop model for state feedback control and estimation using modern control theory.

  • Validate the closed loop system robustness and parameter sensitivity using MiL and RCP bench techniques.

  • Verify the system performance against the system requirements in case of any change from subsystem or component level;

  • Verify the system meets the design specification via the development verification tests (Pre-software integration test);

  • Develop system countermeasures as needed;

  • Request and support specialized equipment development for characterization of electrical and mechanical sub-components of the electro-mechanical assembly under development;

  • Support the system test engineer to execute both System Test and System Integration Test plans as needed.

Education and/or Experience (minimum required for the position)

Master degree in Mechanical engineering with concentration of controls, Mechatronics, Computer Science or Electric Engineering and 2.5 + years of related industrial experience is required. PhD in Mechanical engineering with concentration of controls, Mechatronics, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.

  • Strong understanding of coupled electromechanical system dynamics

  • Strong theoretical & numerical modeling capability

  • Experience using system optimization techniques to insure optimal system design solution

  • Experience in Linear and Non-Linear System Theory and Controls

  • Experience modeling closed loop system dynamics using Matlab/Simulink

  • Experience in motor and power electronic control theory for PMSM motors.

  • Preferred

  • Familiarity with vehicle ESC and braking systems

  • Experience with Parameter Identification Techniques

  • Track record of establishing modern closed loop control systems

  • CarSim for closed loop MiL validation in Simulink

  • Rapid Control Prototyping using dSPACE Toolchain and Mathworks Real-Time Workshop

  • dSPACE Control Desk

  • Experience developing Matlab GUI for System Development Tool integration

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility. However, this position is required to lead cross-functional teams and manage the multiple competing deadlines from each of the interfacing departments.

Physical Demands/Environment

This position requires the following physical abilities: to sit; to use hands (to finger, handle, or feel), to reach with hands and arms, to stand, to talk, to hear and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. In addition, the specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is mostly sedentary; however, there is occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and vibration and to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
