Software Controls Engineer
Position Summary
The Software Controls Engineer will design, develop, deploy, and support the FRIB EPICS-based control system; function as architect and main developer for high level applications to support accelerator operations and experimental systems; integrate advanced hardware systems and architectures to support artificial intelligence and machine learning functionalities in accelerator operations and experimental science.
Analyzes subsystem requirement, proposes technical solution, implements the end to end solution, hands over to operation, and provides continuous support. Architect an integrated high-level application environment; lead the development effort to provide seamless integration between low-level EPICS controls and high-level applications based on Python, C/C++, Java.

Design, implement, and standardize high level applications to support beam commissioning and operation
Design, implement, and manage database solutions for FRIB operations
Interface with operations, commissioning team, and hardware groups to provide prompt support
Assist with integration of various hardware devices to be compliant with FRIB standards
Collaborate with EPICS community to maintain and improve controls infrastructure
Execute work to meet milestones and performance objectives (cost, scope and schedule)
Execute work according to approved work control plans
Stop work when discrepant conditions are encountered and inform line management
Perform work with quality and in safe manner
Create and implement new complex systems and progressive science and technology
Assure completion of work to achieve milestones and goals
Collaborate with leaders to build a success-orientated culture
Maintain lab-wide policies, procedures and standards
Develop project and/or elements of systems work scope, cost, and schedule
Manage and prioritize resources and equipment allocation for projects and/or systems
Execute work to meet project objectives
Identify new initiatives
Supervise work of specialty teams and/or groups
Serve as Responsible Person for Export Control Access Control Plan
Excellent communication skills to present approaches, plans and findings both verbally and through written reports to peers, management and external stakeholders
Participate in and supervise the design, fabrication, assembly, testing and operation of advanced instrumentation systems supporting the goals of the Laboratory's research programs
Reports to group leader or department manager
Interfaces with team members, group leaders, project leaders, subject matter experts and suppliers
Interfaces with installation technician and test technician
Required Degree
Masters
Minimum Requirements
Staff Engineer:
Master’s degree and 5+ years of experience in related industry; or equivalent combination of education, experience, and publications
Excellent understanding of distributed control system software and hardware
Excellent programming skills in C/C++, Python, Java
Familiarity with Linux operating systems like Debian
Demonstrated ability to develop and deploy software applications within a distributed control system environment
Ability to work with export controlled technologies
Engineer:
Master’s degree and 2+ years of experience in related industry; or equivalent combination of education, experience, and publications
Excellent understanding of distributed control system software and hardware
Excellent programming skills in C/C++, Python, Java
Familiarity with Linux operating systems like Debian
Ability to work with export controlled technologies
