Accelerator Physicist

Position Summary

The successful candidates will have experience preferably in the area of computational accelerator and nuclear physics. Contribute to the commissioning, development and operation of the FRIB facility by undertaking projects and activities to improve facility performance as measured by beam quality, intensity, power, purity and variety of isotope beams. This will be accomplished by conceiving and executing studies of primary and secondary beam dynamics using existing beam dynamics software, development of new beam tuning techniques and improvements of existing ones. The Accelerator Physicists will play a critical role in the design, prototype, development, implementation, and maintenance of high level physics applications including artificial intelligence algorithms. These activities will be focused on enhancing the performance of FRIB and providing planned availability of isotope beams on users’ instruments.

Position Duties

  • Development of parallel simulation and optimization codes for production, separation, and transport of rare isotope beams

  • Development of Advanced Rare Isotope Separator (ARIS) settings for efficient separation and purification of rare isotopes

  • Development and application of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to improve the efficiency of the accelerator and/or secondary beam transport devices

  • Contribution to the ARIS upgrade projects

  • Development, implementation, and maintenance of high-level physics applications

  • Complete work to achieve milestones and goals

  • Motivate employees to build a success-oriented culture

  • Follow lab-wide policies, procedures and standards

  • Deliver assigned project work package requirements

  • Manage resource and equipment allocation for projects and/or systems

  • Execute work to meet project objectives

Required Degree

Doctorate -Physics, Electrical, or Computer Enginee

Minimum Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in physics, electrical, or computer engineering and a minimum of two years of experience in accelerator physics and technology; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Comprehensive knowledge of beam physics, especially as applied to heavy-ion accelerators and fragment separators. Comprehensive knowledge and experience with beam dynamics and electrodynamics computer programs.

  • Good knowledge of major programming languages (C++, Python)

  • Considerable knowledge of and experience with the use of accelerator control systems and their underlying concepts.

  • Good communication skills

  • Self-motivated and able to work well within a team

  • Direct the requirements and responsibilities of multiple team members simultaneously and with exemplary quality while under pressure

  • Manage and delegate multiple assignments and deliver quality analysis and work under time constrained deadlines

  • Develop, implement and administer division/department policies and procedures

  • Produce quality work independently and present and report on findings

  • Enhance, interpret and analyze new systems and project information

  • Deliver project and/or systems work scope within cost and schedule

  • Manage and prioritize work of others

  • Analyze, identify, pursue and implement new initiatives

  • Demonstrate experience with the design, setup, execution and analysis of experiments with software development and deployment

  • Ability to work with export controlled technologies

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior experience in higher-order beam optics

  • Prior experience in fragment separator beam physics

  • Familiarity with nuclear physics

  • Experience in parallel computing

  • Physics of interaction of ion beams with materials

  • Good understanding of distributed control system software and hardware

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
