Who we’re looking for

Toyota’s Integrated Vehicle Systems (IVS) Department is looking for a passionate and highly-motivated Automated Driving Systems (ADS) Development Principal Engineer.

The primary responsibility of this role is to support the development of Toyota’s ADSs through software development, simulation, and data analysis related to items such as recognition, mapping, localization, path planning, and vehicle control.

Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the person in this role will support the IVS department's objective to research, develop, evaluate, and implement innovative ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance Systems) and ADS technologies.

What you’ll be doing

  • Develop and evaluate new ADS and ADAS features, focused on North American customers and their unique road environment and use cases.

  • Provide data-driven proposals for new ADS and ADAS features, subsequently supported by software implementations of the proposed algorithms.

  • Evaluate ADS and ADAS features in simulated, closed-track, and public-road environments.

  • Analyze evaluation data with automated and quantitative methods that allow for tracking performance over software releases.

  • Facilitate daily communication with Japanese counterparts to align global activities and drive consensus building.

  • Present project status and demonstrations to stakeholders ranging from Tier2 suppliers to upper Toyota managements.

  • Mentor junior-level members in the group about software architecture, design, and revision tracking.

  • Lead collaboration between different IVS groups by educating production design and evaluation groups of future ADS features.

  • Act as a subject matter expert to other groups within TMNA, as it relates to next-generation ADS.

  • Support the Senior Engineering Manager in negotiating and executing annual JR work assignments, resource management, and work assignment.

  • Ability to drive prototype test vehicles including the ability to gain advanced driver certifications.

What you bring

  • Bachelor of Science OR Master of Science degree (or higher) in computer science, computer engineering, robotics engineering, electrical engineering, or equivalent.

  • Experience developing and testing software using python, C , MATLAB/Simulink or other comparable computer language(s).

  • Experience in leading or collaborating on development of mid-size or large scale systems, from concept, to feature/function requirements, algorithm design, simulation, confirmation, and implementation, through software development or systems development.

  • Experience on ADAS or ADS driving systems development and feature/function design.

  • Proven ability to define innovative data analysis methods which result in easy-to-understand visualized data to support technical storytelling.

  • Good time management and task prioritization skills.

  • Clear and concise presentation skills, both written and oral.

  • Willingness to work overtime, when necessary, up to 10% of the time.

  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally up to 5% of the time.

  • This position requires driving. A motor vehicle record that’s acceptable by company standards is required for this position

Added bonus if you have:

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in a related engineering or computer science field OR more than 10 years working experience in a related field.

  • Passion for and experience with automated vehicles or robotics.

  • Experience designing algorithms using camera, radar, lidar, sonar, or other sensor data.

  • Developing or evaluating experience in ADS technologies such as mapping, localization, path planning, and/or control.

  • Experience in testing, validating, and/or verifying embedded software.

  • Using or creating continuous integration/delivery systems for software experience.

  • Experience using cloud platforms to develop and deploy software (e.g., AWS, Azure).

  • Experience supporting vehicle evaluations on proving grounds or on public roads.
