VMware Senior Open Source Community Relations Engineer (Remote, US Time Zones) in Detroit, Michigan

The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

The Community Engagement team at VMware is looking for a Community Relations Engineer to drive awareness of and engagement in VMware’s open source initiatives in support of Tanzu solutions. You will be responsible for improving the open source contributor experience in VMware-led projects by generating content to highlight Tanzu technical solutions, spotting and addressing issues and confusion in the community, being an active member of the upstream/downstream process, and engaging directly with users in community channels. Combining your passion for community building, writing, and technical expertise, you will help advance VMware’s standing within the open source community and help users in their Kubernetes journey.

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

As VMware continues to evolve in the open source community, you will be responsible for helping users understand VMware’s opinionated path through the CNCF Cloud Native Landscape. You will be called on to create a wide variety of content, speak at events, and strategically integrate into the community to further advocate VMware’s commitments to open source and build credibility around Tanzu solutions. You will be one of the public faces responsible for representing VMware in open source communities.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?

We expect you to:

  • Help build a community around contributors and users for VMware’s Tanzu portfolio by:

  • Creating content and documentation enabling users to be successful using Tanzu open source projects.

  • Raising awareness of VMware Tanzu’s opinionated path in the CNCF Cloud Native Landscape.

  • Getting users excited about adopting Tanzu and Kubernetes.

  • Helping drive the feedback loop to engineers and product managers on users’ experiences with Kubernetes and Tanzu projects.

  • Advocating on behalf of users to ensure that Tanzu projects are meeting the needs of our community.

  • Be an active member of the larger Kubernetes community in contributing to special interest groups (SIGs), documentation, and speaking engagements.

  • Become an ambassador to the various upstream open source projects that make up the Tanzu product portfolio to ensure there is a healthy working relationship.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?

We expect you to:

  • Collect feedback from users, ensuring they feel heard and included in the community.

  • Support users in community channels, like Slack, Stack Overflow, and Reddit.

  • Act as an integral part of the engineering team to help design new capabilities.

  • Foster a sense of collaboration through activity and presence.

  • Effectively communicate with many types of audiences.

  • Frequently speak at conferences, and user groups as it relates to developing and deploying applications using Kubernetes.

  • Establish guidance that onramp’s community members into our projects and community.

  • Work effectively with a remote and distributed team.

  • Assist cross-functional team members when they are stuck, and help others level up their skills by providing kind and direct feedback.

  • Acts as an internal change agent by speaking at VMware events and internal enablement conferences.

  • Create and write content that will help enable users to be successful using Kubernetes

  • Familiarity with open source documentation workflows and tools (git and markdown)

  • Work with engineering and DevRel teams to create demo scenarios that highlight the benefits of using Kubernetes as part of the software development lifecycle.

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Amanda Katona, Community Engagement Director in the Tanzu Kubernetes Grid engineering team. Amanda joined VMware in 2018 after leading open source marketing for The {code} Team representing open source efforts at Dell Technology and Dell EMC. Amanda is passionate about building diverse and inclusive communities. If she’s not working, she’s traveling the world looking for the perfect path less traveled with her daughter.

The Community Engagement team is made up of individuals with diverse backgrounds who are excited about enabling open source project teams to be successful and influential in their respective communities.
