Project Clean Slate is an initiative of the City of Detroit Law Department which helps residents seek expungement of their criminal records to gain access to better employment, housing, and educational opportunities.

Examples of Duties

This project manager is responsible for managing the tasks for Project Clean Slate - the City of Detroit’s program to expunge criminal records for eligible Detroit residents. The primary role will be supporting the Program Director and attorneys. The work ranges from interfacing with clients, court staff, and community partners; ordering certified court records; efiling; processing mail; providing notary services to clients; retrieving fingerprint cards from DPD; tracking metrics; and assisting with public facing initiatives.

Duties Include:

  • Program Director support

  • Attorney support

  • Database management

  • Legal document ordering

  • Coordinating volunteers

  • Project Management - knowledge of project management fundamentals; experience managing multiple projects

  • Customer Advocacy - understanding client needs to improve processes.

  • Passion - must be self motivated, have initiative and have a positive personality.

  • Change Leadership - demonstrated performance as a change agent in the past; ability to deal well with setbacks.

  • Communication - effective verbal and written communication skills at all levels of the organization; essential for the many roles you may fill, i.e. trainer, coach and mentor.

  • Program Specialities - specific experience in law related fields is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA, BS) – in law, criminal justice, political science, business / finance, or equivalent work experience in a law-related field.

  • 3-5 years of experience in the law-related field and / or project management.

Supplemental Information


  • Interview: 70%

  • Evaluation of Training, Experience, & Personal Qualifications: 30%

  • Total of Interview and Evaluation T.E.P: 100%

  • Domicile Credit: 15 Points

  • Veteran Points: up to 15 Points

Technical Skills:

  • Notary (preferred)

  • Familiarity with court processes and e-filing preferred

  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and/or Smartsheet

The City offers disability insurance through payroll deductions for persons who become disabled and who are not yet eligible for a service retirement.

Sick Leave

City employees accrue sick leave based on the number of regular hours worked. Full time employees earn ninety-six (96) hours of sick leave per year. You may carry over your unused sick leave. Effective July 7, 2012 maximum accumulation is 300 hours.

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service; - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service. (In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply); • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service; • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
