Department Summary

The Continous Improvement Specialist position is responsible to provide leadership, guidance, and coaching of continuous improvement efforts specifically through systems thinking and value stream analysis. A key mindset of Consumers Energy’s CE Way is the spirit of continuous improvement where teams are empowered to use lean thinking to improve safety, quality, delivery and cost. The purpose of this role is to drive continuous improvement through value stream mapping and achieve key breakthrough business results in predictability, waste elimination, lowering unit costs, and increasing efficiency. The scope of work will include coaching leadership and teams to strengthen their knowledge and capabilities of value stream mapping, problem solving, kaizen and waste elimination. The Continous Improvement Specialist will be joining a team of lean thinkers and coaches that thrive in both an organized standard work environment and PDCA innovation that adds value throughout our organization in support of operational excellence. The individual must possess an in depth understanding of quality and lean principles. They must be able to collaborate and engage across all of Operations (electric, gas, generation and compression operations in service, distribution, scheduling, contact center, engineering) as well as other leaders and co-workers in Operations Support, Union, Facilities, Corporate, Supply Chain, Finance, Information Technology, Compliance, etc.)

Job Description

  • Engage leadership on the strategy and application of Value Stream Mapping, Unit Cost Analysis, Lead Time Reduction, Process Efficiency Metrics, Inventory Systems, Voice of the Customer and Customer Value.

  • Work with Leaders to show ownership, empowerment, agility, care and deliberate guidance of The CE Way (visual management, standard work, operating reviews, problem solving, waste elimination and kaizen) across business operations. Direct technical understanding in process improvement tools such as quality and documentation management systems, process mapping, workload balance charts, key performance indicators, mind mapping, risk assessment, gap analysis, causes of variation, waste walks, control charts, etc.

  • Conduct routine Go Sees to achieve effective problem solving and root cause analysis. Apply rapid PDCA to simplify processes.

  • Coach with charisma, trust and influence as well as be able to translate the overall vision for the team.

  • Develop and lead a plan to foster a continuous improvement culture through the exchange of ideas, building creative confidence, understanding the voice of the customer, change management tools, recognition programs.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in the applicable field of study. Less than a Bachelor’s degree may be acceptable if accompanied by extensive Company or industry experience.

  • Lean Certification or similar experience working in a lean environment, Value Stream Mapping Understanding, Application and Change Management through lead time reduction and statistical process improvement, and Kaizen Facilitation using Lean tools.

Essential Functions:

Business Support Advisors and Consultants support the planning, business analysis, general management, budget preparations and analysis, negotiations, transactions, customer services and auditing of a wide variety of business functions and processes of specific operating and support areas throughout the Company. Lead and/or assist with business analysis and support for the plans, reports, impacts, contracts, schedules, estimates, data collection, observations, and field investigations. Provide business analysis and support services with accuracy, on time and under budget. Use computer assisted applications software and equipment to prepare business analysis support documents. Understand and follow Company established standard procedures for file structure and standard procedures for projects. Become familiar with business and department and Company plans and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately. Assists in client contact and communication. Utilize effective communication skills to answer inquiries from coworkers, clients, or the public. Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders. Attend internal and external meetings. Provide business analysis and support services in a legal and ethical manner. Regular attendance is expected.

Hours and Travel:

This position requires the individual work 40 hours per week with 90% of time spent in the office or specific field locations. This position may require the ability to travel between field locations. This position may include nights and weekend/holiday timeframes.
